Nanjing

Nanjing, one of the six ancient metropolises of China, has a history of over 2400 years and is reputed as the capital of ten dynasties. There are a lot of relics of the Ming Dynasty, including Stone Carvings of the Southern Dynasties which has survived 1400 years, the Nanjing City Wall built 600 years ago, Zhu Yuanzhang's Mausoleum, Mochou Lake and the arch-shaped brick hall built without using an inch of wood or nail --Wuliangdian in the Lingusi Temple. The cultural relics related to Dr. Sun Yat-sen include Zhongshanlin (Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum), the President Mansion of the Republic and Xuyuan Garden.

Thanks to the geological location and political factor, the Jinling culture inclusive of architecture, arts, literature and religions hold an outstanding place in the traditional culture of the Chinese nation for its distinguished gathering of famous scholars and integration of cultural schools from both the North and South. The Yongle Dictionary, the earliest and biggest of its kind in the world was compiled here in Nanjing. One of the greatest works in China, "A Dream of the Red Mansion," was also based on materials from Nanjing.

Nanjing is a city with mountains, waters and green trees. Its beauty lies in "three creations by nature, high hills, deep waters and plains." With mountains and hills encircling on three sides, Yangtse River running through the city and rivers and lakes lying about, Nanjing boasts beautiful natural scenery, long history and rich culture as an ancient capital of past ten dynasties. The hills, waters, towers, woods and towns integrate into one, forming an unique scenery of various levels.

Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum

For many Chinese, a visit to Sun Yatsen's Tomb (zhongshanling) is something of a pilgrimage. Sun is recognised by the Chinese as the father of modern China. The tomb itself lies at the top of an enormous stone stairway, 323m long and 70m wide. The crypt is at the top of the steps at the rear of the memorial chamber. A tablet with the ' Three Principles of the People', as formulated by Dr Sun is there. The walls are carved with the complete test of the Outline of Princeples for the Establishment of the Nation put forward by the Nationalist government. A prostrate marble statue of Sun seals his coffin.

Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum

Set on the southern slope of the Zhongshan Mountain, the mausoleum of the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Zhu Yuanzhang, and the empress, is the largest among the mausoleums of the emperors of the Ming Dynasty, which is inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2003. Although most of the ground buildings were destroyed during wars, the former splendor can still be seen from the existing wide approach, 800-meter-long, that leads to the mausoleum, flanked on both sides by giant stone statues of warriors and animals.

Linggu Temple

Situated to the east of Sun Yatsen's Mausoleum, the temple was built in the Liang Dynasty (502-557). Its Beamless Hall is the country's largest hall built entirely of bricks without a single beam. The temple was turned into a memorial hall for soldiers killed in the battle in 1928 in memory of martyrs of the Northern Expedition (1926 -1927). In the temple, also stands the "Sanjue (Three Marvels) Tablet" , engraved in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) with a painting by Wu Daozi, a poem by Li Bai and a calligraphic work by Yan Zhenqing. All three were well-known in the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

Fuzimiao

Fuzimiao is in the south of the city, centered on the site of an ancient Confucius temple that was a centre of Confucian studies for more than 1500 years. Fuzimiao has been damaged and rebuilt repeatedly, and what you see here today is newly restored late Qing Dynasty structures or wholly new buildings reconstructed in traditional style. The main Temple of Confucius is behind them on the small square in front of the canal. A five minute walk Northwest from here are the Imperial Examination Halls, where scholars spent months- or years-in tiny cells studying Confucian classics in preparation for civil service examinations. Today, Fuzimiao has become Nanjing's main amusement quarter and is a particularly lively place on weekends and public holidays.

Nanjing Chang Jiang Bridge

The 4.5 kilometer long, double-decker, Nanjing Chang Jiang Bridge was only the second bridge that crossed the Chang Jiang after its completion. Changjiang is also known as the Yangzi River or Yangtze River. Completed in 1968, it is also the first bridge that crosses Chang Jiang to be built entirely by the Chinese. The influence of the era is evident in the socialist-inspired statues on either side of the bridge. The bridge deck provides a good view of the river. It is possible to walk from one side of the bridge to the other.

Xuanwu Lake Park

Close to the city center and featuring 368 hectares of water and 104 hectares of land, Xuanwu Lake Park is a favourite getaway for locals. Well before the sunrise and even after sunset, the park is bustling with visitors. Some come to walk, jog, or fly kites, others to practice Tai Chi, and many more just want to enjoy the scenery. To the east of Xuanwu Lake is Purple Mountain, to the north is Nanjing Train Station, and to the west and south Nanjing's skyscrapers stretch high above the City Wall that was built during the Ming Dynasty. Paved paths circle the entire perimeter of the lake and several forested islands within the lake that are linked by causeways. The best time to visit Xuanwu Lake Park is during May and June.

Nanjing City Wall

Nanjing City Wall, constructed during the Yuan and Ming Dynasties between 1365 and 1386, originally stretched over 30km which made it the longest city wall in the world. Now, with about two thirds of the wall still intact it still remains the longest city wall in China. It reaches all the way from the North end of Xuanwu Lake to the south-west corner of Purple Mountain. It snakes along the edge of Qinghuai River and heads back north all the way up to Yuejiang Tower.

The Former President's House

The Former President's House is located on 292 Changjiang Road, Nanjing City. Before 1949, the liberation of China, it was once the President House of Mr. Sun Yat-sen and Mr. Jiang Jieshi, the chairman of Kuomintang, a political party in China. On January 1912, Mr. Sun Yat-sen made a solemn oath as the first appointed "Interim Grand President" of " the Republic of China" at here. Then, it was the President House of Mr. Jiang Jie-shi, the chairman of KMT, and the ruling party in China before 1949.

No wonder it is the only mountain that is listed in China's Top Ten Scenic Spots and designated as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site. As a matter of fact, just like the Yangtze River, the Great Wall and the Yellow River, Mt.Huangshan has become a symbol of China.
